London fabric shops - tell me more!

As sewing is rather new to me, I am still having the pleasure of finding and exploring nearby fabric shops looking for that perfect haven of not too pricey joy :D Here is what I've found in London so far:

1. My first find that strayed away from John Lewis was The Cloth Shop - 98 Berwick St in Soho. I have mentioned this place before in an earlier post. It consists of two shops on Berwick street, one housing glamourous dress making fabrics and leathers and the second beautiful natural fabrics and lots of Indian and Moroccan style fabric, ooo I love the incense smell of them! But I have a problem with this shop: firstly it is way out of my price range and really I shopped there before I knew any better and thought all fabric no matter what was around £14 a meter eek! Secondly their staff are mean, and unhelpful and so miserable. In their entire workforce I have only met two people who were pleasant - a kooky guy and a kooky girl, everyone else was judgemental, snobby and unhelpful and really I have no desire to surround myself with that kind of person!

2. Then thanks to Hen, I heard of 'Rolls and Rems', based in Lewisham as well as closer to me in Holloway. They have a range of most fabrics you would need (nothing too fancy but beyond just the basics), most of which are around the £4/meter mark and their linen is affordable - brill. Better than that they have a brilliant bargain bin that sells meters for as low as 30p (wowey!) and I'll let you into a little secret - gets restocked every Wednesday morning! The guy that works there is so lovely, he really is brilliant, so helpful and kind even when I ask for silly things that show I know NOTHING about fabric (i was looking for pure wool felt at a cheap price - ha!). So this is my new favourite fabric store! Oh and another bonus point is for Holloway market opposite that sells primarily sari material but also others (but you have to search) for £1/metre - bring it on!

3. Thirdly I came across Joel and Son - 77-81 Church Street, "London's leading and largest couture fabric store". Well of course I had no idea what this really meant and just thought wow London's biggest fabric shop and paid them a visit. Wow, I actually had to ask 'are these prices for the entire roll?' No, I was told it was in fact £100 a METRE!! wowey! At the time I was looking for some fairly simple grey cotton with a print; when I asked for help and was lead to the Armani section I knew this was not the place for me! How do people afford this and why spend that much money on what is essentially just cotton knowing that you then have to spend even more in time turning into a finished item?! I am stunned! Of course I realise many designers will want to use the best but some of this fabric was so so ghastly! The trip however was a real eye opener into couture.

I'm sure there must be so many more that just the three fabric shops I've come across in London, in fact I know Berwick Street itself has more than three but I am looking for bargainous gems - so please leave a comment, point me in a new direction!

hej ho...

i know your post is a while ago... but just in case you are still looking for fabric stores...

the stores where i shop are mainly
"john lewis" - oxford street
"liberty" - great marlborough street
(now you might role your eyes as there might not be know for to little prices, but beside the more expensive items, they both offer also fabrics for decent prices... one just has to have a look around..)
"Atlantic Silk Fabrics" - 28 Electric Avenue, brixton
(sounds more glories then they are... the staff is alrightish.. not superb... they have a hugh selection of fabrics, but one has to have an eye on the quality... but therefore one can find a real bargain.) - there are about three other fabric stores close by, but i haven't been to those...

however.. i hope this helped a bit...

have a good day.
